IZOD Indy Car driver passes after multi-car pileup at Las Vegas Motor Speedway
Las Vegas, NV (October 17, 2011) The racing community lost a friend, role model and champion on October 16th 2011 during the 2011 IZOD IndyCar World Championship at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Dan Wheldon, 33 years old, was involved in a 15 car accident that ended in the loss of his life.
News of his death came from IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard, "IndyCar is very sad to announce that Dan Wheldon has passed away from unsurvivable injuries," he said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family today. IndyCar, its drivers and owners, have decided to end the race."
The race was abandoned in Wheldon’s honor and drivers took part in a five-lap salute around the 1.5-mile oval as thousands of fans stood and cheered from the grandstand. Wheldon's number 77 was displayed alone at the top of the scoring pylon.
Wheldon was the 2005 Indy Racing League IndyCar Series champion, and winner of the Indianapolis 500 in 2005 and 2011. He will be incredibly missed and mourned throughout Indianapolis and in the hearts of fans everywhere.
